Product Description of Xylene CAS#1330-20-7

Xylene (dimethylbenzene) is a clear, colorless aromatic liquid. Its molecular structure is formed when two hydrogen atoms on the benzene ring are substituted by methyl groups, and its boiling point ranges from 137 to 140°C.

Three isomers of xylene exist: o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene, distinguished by the positional arrangement of methyl substituents. In industrial scenarios, the term “xylene” usually denotes a blend of these three isomers together with ethylbenzene. Commercial grades are commonly categorized as premium grade and first-grade, classified according to distillation ranges of 3°C and 5°C respectively.

This solvent is fully miscible with ethanol, chloroform and diethyl ether, yet immiscible with water. It is extensively utilised as an organic solvent across pharmaceutical, coating, resin, dyestuff, explosive and pesticide industries.

Xylene carries moderate toxicity and poses potential carcinogenic hazards. Environmental contamination can originate from synthetic fibers, plastics, fuels, rubber, coating additives, adhesives, waterproof materials, as well as exhaust released during fuel combustion and tobacco burning.
